Atapuerca es una pequeña localidad situada a 24 km de Burgos, como parte del Camino de Santiago.
El área objeto del proyecto se sitúa en la zona este del municipio, dentro del casco urbano consolidado, aunque en contacto con el entorno de la fuente y lavadero, de gran valor ambiental.
La actuación tiene como objeto la urbanización del espacio público de una pequeña área residencial (5 viviendas), próximo a una de las plazas del núcleo y colindante a una de los trazados del Camino de Santiago. Los edificios del entorno de actuación son de uso vivienda unifamiliar en parte de construcción tradicional y en parte de sustitución.
Parte del área está semipavimentada con zahorras y el resto es una zona con carácter más o menos verde. Existe arbolado de pequeño porte, principalmente en la banda más próxima a la calle.
La propuesta pretende recuperar un espacio de interés en el núcleo urbano de Atapuerca, tanto por su posición central como por su vinculación al Camino de Santiago y a dos de los espacios libres de interés de Atapuerca: la plaza de Enmedio y el entorno de la fuente y el lavadero, de gran interés cultural y ambiental.
Se plantea un tratamiento del espacio con pavimentación uniforme de despiece grande en tres despieces de densidades diferenciadas: para soportar uso mixto peatonal+rodado en el primero, uso principalmente peatonal en el segundo, y plantación de especies autóctonas en el tercero, de uso estancial exclusivamente.
La intervención controla la vegetación y trata sutilmente el plano del terreno para mejorar la accesibilidad.
Se ordenan las áreas en tres niveles de uso diferenciados a partir de la situación existente, pero con un criterio común. De esta manera se pretende que la intervención se interprete como unitaria en los límites de lo público, y que al mismo tiempo permita responder a una asimetría funcional y una gradación hacia lo natural, de cierto interés.
Finalmente, la intervención pretende utilizar un lenguaje formal de piezas de cierta autonomía que permita su utilización en otras localizaciones sin que cada fase aparezca como inacabada.
Se valora el contenido patrimonial del espacio tratado más que el valor material de los elementos edificados. El hilo conductor de la intervención es el espacio libre público asociado en primer lugar al trazado físico y simbólico del Camino de Santiago, y en segundo, al curso del agua y a su disfrute. Se propone un tratamiento del área interpretado como una suma de situaciones, desde el propio núcleo urbano hasta el borde del entorno verde de la fuente y el lavadero.
En el tratamiento del espacio libre se han superpuesto a grandes manchas asociadas al movimiento (losas y zahorra) y la estancia (verde) una trama de elementos de pavimentación con variaciones de ritmo que unifica toda la intervención.
Se ha buscado un motivo que permita entender la intervención como un conjunto a partir de un elemento de pavimentación repetido pero con un ritmo variable según los ámbitos. Se pretende además que el sistema de piezas permita intervenir en otras áreas de diferente configuración e intensidad de tráfico, y mantener el carácter verde propio del espacio libre en el núcleo.
Se pretenden conseguir planos verdes de más fácil mantenimiento. Para ello se han introducido elementos de pavimentación que permitan un uso cómodo y controlen el crecimiento de la vegetación. Se proyectan siete macizos de aromáticas en el ámbito más pavimentado: Lavandula angustifolia, Salvia officinalis, Thymus vulgaris
Por otro lado se proponen tres masas de arbolado relacionadas con zonas de estancia. Sorbus domestica en la banda más próxima a la calle y Fraxinus angustifolia en dos grupos sobre la zona verde de estancia.
El resultado de la intervención es la introducción de una cierta artificialidad a través de la urbanización para remarcar el contenido público del espacio y su característica naturalidad.

Atapuerca is a small village situated 24 km away from Burgos, as part of the Camino de Santiago.
The area covered by the project is located on the east zone of the town, within the consolidated urban area, although in contact with the environs of the fountain and washing shed, with a great environmental value.
The intervention has as object the urbanization of the public space of a small residential area (five houses), next to one of the squares of the town and adjacent to one of the routes of the Camino de Santiago. The buildings in the intervention area are single-family housing, part traditional and part replacement.
Part of the area is semi-paved with gravel and the rest remains more or less natural. There are some small-size trees, mainly in the strip next to the street.
The proposal seeks to recover an area of interest in the town of Atapuerca, both for its central position as by its link to the Camino de Santiago and two of the open spaces of interest in Atapuerca: plaza de Enmedio and the environs of the fountain and washing shed, with a great cultural and environmental value.
A treatment of the space is proposed with big format paving in three grids of differentiated densities: to withstand mixed use pedestrian+vehicular in the first, mainly pedestrian use in the second, and planting of native species in the third, of stay use exclusively.
The intervention controls vegetation and treats subtly the ground plane to improve accessibility.
The areas are arranged in three differentiated levels of use from the existing situation, but with a common approach. In this way is intended the intervention to be interpreted as unitary in the limits of the public, and at the same time to respond to a functional asymmetry and a gradation of some interest toward what is natural. Finally, the intervention intends to use a formal language of parts of some autonomy to allow its use in other locations, each phase not appearing as unfinished.
The patrimonial content of the treated space is valued rather than the material value of the elements built on. The thread of the intervention is the open public space associated in the first place at the physical and symbolic track of the Camino de Santiago, and in the second, to the course of water and to its enjoyment. We propose a treatment of the area interpreted as a sum of situations, from the urban area to the edge of the natural environment of the fountain and the washing shed.
In the treatment of the open space, a frame of paving elements with variations of pace that unifies all the intervention have overlapped to large spots associated with movement (slabs and gravel) and the stay (green).
A motif to understand the intervention as a whole has been searched for from a repeated paving element but with a variable rate according to the areas. The aim is the system of parts to allow us intervene in other areas of different configuration and intensity of traffic, and maintain the peculiar green character of the open space in the town.
The aim is to obtain green planes of an easier maintenance. To this end paving elements have been introduced to allow a comfortable use and control the growth of vegetation. Seven clumps of aromatic plants are projected in the paved field: Lavandula angustifolia, Salvia officinalis, Thymus vulgaris.
On the other hand, three masses of trees are proposed related to areas of stay. Sorbus domestica in the band closer to the street and Fraxinus angustifolia in two groups on the green zone of stay.
The result of the intervention is the introduction of a certain artificiality through urbanization so as to remark as the same time the public content of the space and its characteristic naturalness.
